May 17 - 19, Doha 🇶🇦

Doha is one of the most popular choices of layovers for many flying between North America, Europe and Asia. This time, I took advantage of this stopover, and made it a 3-day culture trip in Doha.

My flight arrived in Doha in the early morning, then I headed to my stay. During the day (from the morning to about 4PM), the streets of Doha is nearly un-walkable. I was outside for 5 mins and I was totally dehydrated. So I would recommend heading out between 3:30PM and come back later in the evening.

The Museum of Islamic Arts

The meseum features a diverse collection of well-preserved artefacts of the Islamic world. Besides that, the meseum’s remarkable architecture also makes it a great attraction.

I recommend visiting here 1.5h before the sunset to capture wonderful shots like this during the golden hour and the night view shots of the bay, after seeing the exhibits.

Katara

The Katara Culture Village is an artificial village of Qatari traditional architecture. It features mosques, cafes, outdoor markets and shops, and an open air theatre. I recommend visiting here in between late afternoon and the evening, when the sun is low. Thus, you can capture the play of light and shadow between the houses, and the tranquility of the night here.

I chatted with a Sudanese man, who’s guarding a mosque. He talked about the place of Islam and the Holy Quran in this life, and offered to write my name in Arabic calligraphy.
