Night+storm: Newark Spotting

September 10th, 2023

Newark Liberty (KEWR) is, in my opinion, the worst airport to conduct spotting work in the greater New York area. Unfriendly and rude staff, tough spotting environment, and low aircraft variety. However, with the assistance of a Newark based spotter and couple of my crew members, we were able to head into the uncharted and explore.

KEWR has two main runways, one for departures and one for arrivals (most of the time). In the morning, flights arrived from the north. We set up our camera at ECONOMY PARKING P6 at the north of the airport.

Shortly after the morning rain stopped, couple of rare aircarfts arrived. See also:

In the afternoon, following a shift of wind direction, all inbound aircrafts began to arrive from the south. So we moved our setup to Elizabeth Center in Elizabeth, NJ, just across the expressway from Newark Liberty. This is a relatively friendlier place to spot, as there’s no rude patrolling staff threatening you with calling the police. And, being able to grab food from a nearby IKEA at anytime is a big plus.

But soon, as the night falls, camera settings can no longer keep up with the moving aircrafts. The photo quality started to drop.

But the storm hits, once again.

Photos became “potato-cam” quality:

Out of all five cameras we carried, only one was able to last through the bad visibility. Hence, thanks to @Chuimer_Shark for authorizing our use of this magnificant shot taken that night.
